RV Leveling System Installation Guide
Step-by-step guide to installing an RV automatic leveling system. Covers electric jack installation, hydraulic system setup, wiring, calibration, and testing procedures.
Before You Begin
Installing an RV leveling system requires mechanical and electrical knowledge. If you are not confident in your abilities, consult a professional RV technician. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with your specific system.
Safety Precautions
- Disconnect the RV battery before working on electrical connections
- Use jack stands when working under the vehicle
- Wear safety glasses and gloves
- Ensure the RV is on level ground before installation
- Never exceed the rated capacity of the system
Tools Required
- Socket wrench set (metric)
- Drill with metal drill bits
- Wire strippers and crimpers
- Multimeter
- Torque wrench
- Measuring tape
- Level (for calibration)
Step 1: Mounting the Jacks
Electric Jacks
- Identify mounting locations on the RV frame. Most electric jacks use 2-1/4 inch mounting holes.
- Clean the mounting surface thoroughly
- Position the jack and insert mounting bolts
- Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications
- Ensure the jack extends and retracts freely before final tightening
Henghong electric jacks feature durable powder-coated finish and fit standard 2-1/4" mounting holes common on most RV frames.
Hydraulic Jacks
- Mount hydraulic cylinders to frame brackets using supplied hardware
- Ensure cylinders are aligned vertically
- Mount the hydraulic pump unit in a protected compartment
- Route hydraulic lines from pump to each cylinder
- Tighten all fittings to specified torque
- Fill reservoir with approved hydraulic fluid
Step 2: Electrical Connections
- Route the main power cable from the battery to the control unit
- Install an inline fuse or circuit breaker (recommended: 30A for electric systems)
- Connect the control unit ground wire to chassis ground
- Run wiring harness from control unit to each jack motor
- Connect the control panel in a convenient interior location
- Verify all connections with a multimeter before powering on
For 12V systems:
- Use appropriate gauge wire (minimum 10 AWG recommended)
- Keep power cable runs as short as possible
- Use heat shrink connectors for weather resistance
Step 3: Control Unit Configuration
- Power on the system and check that the control panel lights up
- Test each jack individually in manual mode
- Verify extension and retraction direction for each jack
- If jacks move in the wrong direction, reverse motor polarity
- Program the automatic leveling sequence per manufacturer instructions
Henghong systems support both automatic and manual operation modes. The automatic mode uses built-in tilt sensors to achieve level without user intervention.
Step 4: Calibration
- Park the RV on a known level surface
- Activate the automatic leveling sequence
- The system will extend jacks in sequence until level is achieved
- Verify level using a bubble level inside the RV
- If not level, adjust manually and recalibrate the zero point
- Test retraction to ensure all jacks clear the ground
Step 5: Final Testing
Before completing installation:
- Test the full automatic leveling cycle 3 times
- Check all electrical connections for heat or loose wires
- Verify ground clearance with jacks fully retracted
- Test emergency manual override (hand crank operation)
- Check for hydraulic fluid leaks (hydraulic systems only)
- Document the installation for warranty purposes
Common Installation Mistakes
- Undersized wiring: Leads to voltage drop and slow operation
- Incorrect mounting: Jacks not aligned vertically can bind
- Poor ground connection: Causes intermittent operation
- Missing fuse: Risk of electrical damage
- Not testing before full installation: Always bench-test components first
Post-Installation Maintenance
- Inspect mounting bolts after first 100 miles of travel
- Lubricate moving parts every 6 months
- Check hydraulic fluid level quarterly
- Test operation before each trip
- Clean jacks after exposure to road salt or mud
